Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale residents Frank and Betty Swanson have built a life together rooted in resilience, adventure, advocacy, and a love that has only grown stronger through the years. Their journey—spanning mountains, coastlines, and countless memories—began with two unique stories, each shaped by family, hard work, and a spirit of devotion.

Frank’s story starts in Seattle, Washington, and raised as an only child in the small coastal town of Edmonds. At the time, Edmonds was a very rural community where hard work was simply part of daily life. He attended grade school and high school there, growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. As a teenager, Frank became a poultry farmer, a demanding job that required early mornings, dedication, and responsibility. That experience not only shaped his strong work ethic, but it also helped him pay his way through college. After high school, he enrolled at Washington State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, specializing in Poultry Science.

Betty’s story began in the Rio Grande Valley of Colorado, surrounded by beautiful mountains that she still loves and misses today. Her grandparents built a cabin there for the family to enjoy during the spring and summer months, creating treasured memories in the great outdoors. Betty was the middle child between one brother and two sisters. She attended grade school and high school and later began college with the goal of becoming a dietician. During that time, tragedy struck when her father — who had been an excellent provider for the family — passed away. Betty made the selfless decision to return home to help her family, demonstrating the strength and devotion that would continue to define her life.

Frank and Betty met on a blind date in what they fondly describe as their own version of “Sleepless in Seattle.” A friend of Betty’s asked if she would like to meet a nice young man. Betty agreed, and that young man was Frank. He was 25, she was 24, and they were married in 1960, beginning a beautiful partnership that has now spanned decades.

Frank had served as an ROTC officer and worked as a Quartermaster, taking on significant responsibilities including feeding troops, housekeeping oversight, and managing warehousing and supplies. Prior to being cleared for active duty, however, he did not pass the physical due to a limp he sustained in high school while wrestling, an injury that resulted in breaking both kneecaps while facing a much larger opponent.

After his military service, Frank worked for an agricultural company that produced animal foods. When he was laid off during a recession, he found himself needing a new direction. A cousin asked if he would be interested in selling insurance. Frank admitted he didn’t know a thing about insurance, so his cousin handed him a book. After reading it, Frank decided he could give it a try and secured a trainee position in Tacoma, Washington. That decision marked the beginning of a remarkable 27-year career in insurance, eventually rising to the role of Vice President. His career required the family to move throughout the western United States, and together Frank and Betty embraced the adventure. Frank was able to retire early at the age of 52, and they eventually settled in Oregon.

Together they raised two sons. One son tragically battled mental health challenges for much of his life and is now deceased. Through that deeply personal experience, Frank and Betty became strong advocates for those struggling with mental illness and for families navigating similar challenges. They joined the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and became champions for awareness and support. Their other son lives in the area and is a senior scientist at a corporation, and he remains an important part of their lives.

Over the years, the Swansons made lasting memories camping and hiking with their boys in the Washington Cascades during summer vacations. Betty especially loved hiking in the mountains and still misses them today. They also cherished time spent along the beaches of Washington State. Later in retirement, they traveled to Europe, including a meaningful trip to England to explore Betty’s ancestry. With the maiden name Drake, she hoped to discover whether she was connected to Sir Francis Drake. Research suggests she is likely descended from Sir Francis Drake’s brother, a special discovery that made the journey even more memorable.

The warmth and love between Frank and Betty is truly something to witness. Their kindness, respect, and devotion to one another shine brightly. When choosing their home at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale, they were drawn to the warmth and interaction they felt between staff and residents. \Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale resident Marlene Krause has lived a life full of adventure, resilience, and unmistakable flair. Born and raised in the township of Pine Lake, Wisconsin, Marlene was one of seven children, growing up alongside four sisters and two brothers. Her strong work ethic began early—at just 12 years old, she picked beans in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, marking the start of a lifetime of dedication and determination.

After graduating from Rhinelander High School, Marlene continued her education at Madison Area Technical College, earning a degree in Medical Office Mid Management. She went on to spend more than 14 years as a nurse scheduler at UW Hospital, a role she truly enjoyed—especially because of the people she worked with.

Marlene’s personal journey includes both great love and great strength. Her first husband was a career Army serviceman who tragically lost his life during the Vietnam War. Together, they had three children. Marlene later remarried and welcomed two more children, growing a family that remains a central joy in her life. Today, she is the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, and she especially cherishes time spent celebrating holidays and birthdays with her family.

After her time at UW Hospital, Marlene discovered a surprising new chapter in her career. While driving past a newly opening local jewelry store, she noticed a large diamond being installed and famously thought, “I want to work in that building.” She walked in, secured a job on the spot, and worked there for the next 15 years.

Standing just 4’11”, Marlene’s petite stature is paired with a big personality. Known affectionately by her nickname, “Queen,” she truly carries a regal aura. She even spent time modeling and proudly embraces her bold presence. A self-proclaimed tomboy, Marlene has always loved sports and staying active. She was an avid water skier—always safely wearing a life jacket since she doesn’t swim—and played catcher on an all-women’s fast-pitch championship softball team in Rhinelander. She likes to joke that she was in “a league of her own” long before A League of Their Own existed.

Creative and independent, Marlene considers herself a natural beautician. She has always done her own hair and nails and even ran her own nail business for several years. She enjoys watching sports, traveling, and experiencing new places—though her favorite destination remains Rome, Italy.

While Marlene has lived in several states throughout her life, she confidently declares that " Wisconsin is the best state of all." With her fascinating life story, vibrant spirit, and unmistakable presence, Marlene truly embodies strength, joy, and individuality—and we are so grateful to have her as part of our community.

Mary has called Verona home her entire life, graduating from Verona High School in 1953 before heading to Madison Business College to further her education. After college, she spent eight years as a stenographer for the State of Wisconsin, a role where her keen attention to detail and steadfast work ethic truly shone.

Mary’s life took a delightful turn when she met her future husband in the most unexpected way—over a game of shuffleboard on State Street in Madison. He would go on to serve during the Korean War, and together they built a life grounded in family, warmth, and love. While raising their son Mike, Mary helped support the family’s apartment rentals, making their properties welcoming homes for many tenants through the years.

Family has always been at the center of Mary’s world. She and her husband raised one son, Mike, who has since blessed them with three grandchildren. These days, Mary is especially grateful—one granddaughter is preparing to be married this coming September, and a grandson lives just up the street.

Outside of her family, Mary has always found joy in tending flowers and plants and took pride in keeping a beautiful yard. She also fondly remembers a single adventurous summer as a waitress—an experience she laughs about now and admits was “more than enough” after just that one season!

Meet Jim and Darlene Retzloff, a wonderful couple whose story is filled with love, adventure, and lasting friendships.

Both born and raised in Wisconsin, Jim and Darlene’s paths first crossed thanks to a mutual friend—and the rest, as they say, is history. The couple married in 1961, beginning a life journey full of shared experiences and cherished memories.

In 1959, Jim was drafted into the military, and early in their marriage the couple lived at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Darlene recalls those years fondly, sharing that she built strong friendships with other wives on base and truly didn’t mind the experience of military life.

After their time on base, Darlene spent several years teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, working with students up to fifth grade. She later continued to teach as a substitute and was often told she had a special gift for it. Her warmth and dedication made a lasting impression on her students.

Jim enjoyed a long and fulfilling 35-year career as an engineer at Alliant Energy, where he made many good memories and was fortunate to retire early. The Retzloffs raised their three children, two daughters and a son, in Northern Wisconsin, surrounded by the beauty of lake country and a few peaceful acres of property. Today, they are proud grandparents of three grandchildren, all living nearby in Madison. Although they’ve experienced the deep loss of their son, they continue to celebrate family and cherish the blessings in their lives.

Throughout the years, Jim and Darlene have enjoyed traveling and cruising, collecting memories from destinations around the world. They spent about ten years living in Bradenton, Florida, before deciding to return home to Wisconsin. When it came time to settle back in, they chose Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale—and say it was the perfect decision.

Jim and Darlene share that they feel truly blessed and are grateful for the welcoming community they’ve found here. Meet Richard Hadler, resident at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale whose handshake is as steady as the Wisconsin farmland where he grew up. Born in Milwaukee and raised on a busy farm in Grafton, Richard’s childhood days were filled with the rhythm of chores and the laughter of his two sisters. Yet, even as a boy among the fields, Richard knew he was destined for something beyond the tractor and barn.

After high school, with a sense of adventure in his heart, he joined the Air Force at the height of the Berlin and Cuban Missile Crises.

Richard likes to joke that his dream of “seeing the world” mostly meant seeing a lot of Texas and Kansas, but he remembers his service with pride and gratitude. “Everyone could benefit from going through it,” he says, reflecting on the friendships and life lessons that came from those years in uniform.

Leaving the military, Richard rolled up his sleeves for what would become a remarkable 40-year career in manufacturing and supervision. For nearly two decades, he managed teams at Sprig Electric, helping build the radios and televisions that once filled American living rooms. Later, at Allen-Bradley in Milwaukee, he led crews crafting the electric drives that powered the local paper mills. Richard’s work ethic and leadership didn’t come from a college degree, but from determination and a knack for bringing out the best in his team.

Richard’s life story is also a love story. He met his wife, Judy, back in high school—she was his very first date. They waited for Richard to turn 21 before marrying, making it official while he was serving in the Air Force. Together, they shared 54 years of partnership, raising four children—Mark, Mike, Debbie, and Elizabeth—and building a family tree that now includes grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Judy passed away in 2016, but her memory lives on in the stories Richard shares and the family they built together.

Though his Air Force travels were limited, Richard’s love of hunting and fishing carried him to wild corners of the globe. He’s trekked through North America and even ventured to Africa, where he collected stories and a few impressive trophies—kudu, gemsbok, zebra, and warthog among them. He still smiles recalling the chill of Canadian mornings spent in search of moose, elk, or caribou.

Today, Richard is settling into community life with that same sense of adventure that’s always guided him. He’s proud of his long career, the family he and Judy built, and the winding path that’s brought him here. If you ask around Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale, you’ll quickly hear about Tom Leonard, the man with a story for every occasion, a kind word for every neighbor, and a knack for turning even simple moments into something memorable.

Tom’s journey started in Boston, Massachusetts, where, at just twelve years old, he found a family and a true sense of home in what he describes as the most wonderful foster home. That early experience of deep love and encouragement set the foundation for the warmth and generosity that define him today.

From a young age, Tom was drawn to the outdoors and to sports, especially baseball and football. He’s been a loyal Boston Red Sox fan all his life, but it was in the pool where he truly made a splash. Renowned for his backstroke, Tom once broke the minute mark in the 100-yard backstroke, a feat he remembers with pride. That swimming talent would prove life-changing, not just for Tom, but for someone else, too.

One summer, while working as a lifeguard, Tom noticed a frantic mother searching for her missing child in the water. Acting quickly, he organized a line of people to search the water, and eventually they spotted the boy on the other side of a fence that separated the shallows from deeper water. Tom didn’t hesitate. He swam beyond the fence, instructed the boy to wrap his arms and legs around him, and carried him safely back to shore. The image of the boy’s mother, sobbing with relief and gratitude, remains etched in Tom’s memory—a testament to the difference a single act of courage can make.

Tom’s passion for learning led him to Harvard University, where he became a professor of genetics. His time at Harvard was filled with teaching, mentorship, and a special joy: the university’s on-site daycare allowed him to watch his daughter, Anne Cathrine, play just outside his classroom window. For Tom, nothing has ever matched the pride and happiness his daughter brings him. “My proudest accomplishment is my daughter, Anne Cathrine,” he says without hesitation.

The memories Tom treasures most are those shared with Anne Cathrine, reading stories together, weekend shopping trips, and the excitement of buying her first Chevy. His thoughtfulness extended to his wife as well; one Mother’s Day, Tom surprised her with a book from her personal “must-read” list, a list he’d discovered tucked away in a drawer. He carefully chose a title, and the thoughtfulness and effort behind the gift touched her deeply.

Today, Tom and Anne Cathrine remain close, sharing coffee, lunches, and favorite memories, including an unforgettable cruise to England. Steve Brown’s story begins in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he was the oldest of four children growing up in a household grounded in faith and compassion. His father, a devoted pastor, and his mother, Margaret, a hardworking registered nurse, instilled in Steve lessons of kindness and dedication that would guide him throughout his life.

After graduating high school, Steve pursued a degree in social studies (now social science) at Michigan State University, earning his diploma in 1970. His journey then took him to Madison, Wisconsin, where he attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison Law School, graduating in 1973. Passing the state bar exam, Steve began working in consumer protection for the State of Wisconsin, where he witnessed the harsh realities tenants faced at the hands of slumlords. Though he fought fiercely for these families, he felt compelled to create change in a more personal way.

In 1980, Steve took a bold step—he began buying properties himself, determined to be the kind of landlord who treated tenants with dignity and respect. “I’m not a landlord,” Steve says with a smile, “I’m a friend who rents apartments.” Over the next four decades, his business flourished, managing a portfolio of apartments and overseeing a team of more than 150 employees, all while holding true to his values of fairness and care.

Steve’s personal life has been equally full and rich. He met his wife Laurel through a friend, and together they built a loving partnership. Laurel’s creative spirit shines through her successful architecture and interior design firm, Brownhouse Designs, located in downtown Madison. Their two daughters, Maggie—a lawyer in San Antonio, Texas—and Abigail—a teacher in Brooklyn, New York—carry forward the family’s legacy of service and passion.

Now retired, Steve fills his days with pursuits that bring him joy and peace. You’ll often find him out on the golf course with friends, lost in a good book, or journaling his thoughts. And if he’s not in his thoughtfully decorated 10th-floor apartment, he’s likely out for a stroll with Roxy, his beloved Havanese dog, who has won the hearts of the entire Renaissance community.

Steve Brown’s life is a testament to standing up for what’s right, building community with kindness, and living every day with integrity. We are honored to have him as part of the Renaissance family and look forward to many more shared moments and memories.

Arthur and Cathrine “Cathy” Bregman’s story reads like a novel written by fate itself. Though they grew up on opposite coasts—Cathy in the historic charm of Baltimore and Arthur amidst the bustling streets of New York—they both found themselves drawn to the sun-soaked shores of Miami, Florida, in the same month and year. Imagine living just across the street from someone for years without ever crossing paths, until destiny stepped in at a conference in 1981 and sparked a connection that would last a lifetime. For 43 years, Arthur and Cathy have been inseparable, sharing a love story woven with laughter, adventure, and deep companionship.

Their life together is a vibrant tapestry of shared passions, with the sea playing a starring role. Their motorized boat was more than just a vessel—it was a floating haven of family memories, where sun-kissed days were spent fishing, diving into crystal-clear waters, and drifting under endless blue skies. Their son Adam practically grew up on the boat, learning the rhythms of the sea and the joy of freedom it offers, becoming a confident and capable captain in his own right. Their wanderlust carried them across the globe, sailing on cruises through the sparkling turquoise of the Bahamas, the rich cultures of South America and Europe, the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand, and even the icy wonder of Antarctica, where they marveled at penguins waddling in their frozen kingdom. Yet, despite these grand adventures, it was the neon glow and irresistible energy of Las Vegas that captured their hearts most—an “adult playground” they visited once per season (four times a year!), savoring the warm, dry air and the thrill of endless entertainment.

The Bregmans’ love extended beyond travel and adventure to the many furry friends who shared their journey. Over the years, their home was filled with the joyful chaos of cats and dogs, from golden labs that brought years of loyal companionship to calico cats with their independent charm. Their mini goldendoodle, Alf—named after the beloved TV character—was a special treasure, his affectionate nature and playful spirit bringing smiles and warmth to every corner of their lives.

Behind these rich experiences were two dedicated professionals who balanced career and family with grace. Arthur’s work as a physician reflected his lifelong commitment to caring for others, while Cathy blended her role as a social worker with the nurturing heart of a homemaker. After nearly half a century in the vibrant city of Miami, the couple embraced a new chapter in Madison, Wisconsin, moving in March 2025 to be closer to their son Adam and to become cherished members of Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale.

Today, Arthur’s eyes light up at the roar of football games, his loyalty unwavering regardless of the team, while Cathy immerses herself in the suspense of thrillers and mysteries, the tactile pleasure of board games and puzzles, and the joy of musical performances that stir the soul. Together, they thrive on lively conversations and spirited debates, especially when it comes to politics, sharing their wisdom and zest for life with everyone they meet.

Pete Smelser’s journey began under the sunny skies of Oceanside, California, but it was in the quiet hills of De Luz that he and his siblings, Ben, Lois, Hellen, and John, made a lifetime of memories. Pete fondly recalls those mile-long walks to school, the chatter of siblings side by side, and the special treat of homemade ice cream made by their mother on warm afternoons.

After high school, Pete set his sights on the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His career path was as varied as it was impressive, from working at the National Bureau of Standards Cryogenic Engineering Lab and other labs to running his very own goat dairy farm. Life with goats and a few beloved cats (their last, Jennifer, lived to an astonishing 20 years) painted a unique and joyful backdrop to his days.

Pete’s heart found its lifelong partner in Ruth, the love of his life. Together, they shared 66 years of marriage, raising two children, Peggy Anne and Daniel, who now make their homes in Madison. Pete’s grandchildren live in San Francisco, adding another layer to his family’s wide-reaching story.

Pete’s passions have always been as vibrant as his spirit. Gardening nurtured his love for nature’s quiet beauty, while crafting and flying model airplanes brought excitement to his skies. His devotion to model planes even led him to the famed Experimental Aircraft Association events in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, twice. When he’s not outdoors, Pete enjoys the rich sounds of classical music, filling his days with harmony and rhythm.

Since moving to Madison to be closer to family, Pete joined Renaissance Senior Living at Hilldale in February 2023. Here, his outgoing nature and eagerness to try new activities make him a beloved part of the community. One especially memorable moment came on a family trip to Florida, where Jeanne gathered sand dollars for her students to paint. She still chuckles over a parent’s earnest request for the “recipe” to make sand dollars—a moment of humor that captures Jeanne’s warm spirit.

After many years in the classroom, Jeanne sought a change and found a new home in senior care at Oakwood Village in Madison, Wisconsin. Home for Shirley Fagan has always been more than a place—it’s the feeling of belonging she’s carried from the rolling fields of De Forest, Wisconsin, to her welcoming apartment at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale. Born and raised in a small town just outside Madison, Shirley’s childhood was filled with the simple joys of farm life—her father ran a dairy for De Milk, her mother taught school, and Shirley and her younger sister Patricia ran wild among a band of barn cats.

The sisters, only five years apart, were best friends from the beginning. Shirley remembers their bond with a twinkle: “She was my only sister, and we were always close. My friends thought she was kind of a dope, but that’s what little sisters are for!” Whether they were laughing at home or spending endless summer days together, their friendship was the golden thread of Shirley’s upbringing.

Summers brought a special magic: the family’s trips to Door County, where Shirley and Patricia joined the Green Ram Theatre’s Summer Stock program. The outdoor stage became their playground, and each performance brought them closer—not just as sisters, but as lifelong friends. “I never have to be alone,” Shirley says, her voice warm with memory, “because I have a sister.” Even now, when life and distance keep them apart—Patricia lives in Milwaukee with her son—they share regular phone calls, warm reunions, and that same sense of belonging.

Shirley’s love of learning led her to U.W. Madison, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. She found her calling at the U.W. Hospital, meeting people from every walk of life and helping them find comfort and hope. Life gave Shirley the rare gift of loving deeply, twice. Her first marriage was a happy one, full of laughter, travel, and adventure—journeys together across Europe and Mexico. After the loss of her first husband, Shirley found joy again with Robert. Together, they adopted Patches, a loyal dog who’s still by her side and has become a beloved member of the Renaissance community.

Ask Triveni Shukla about his childhood, and you won’t hear complaints about long school days—you’ll hear stories of determination. Born in a village in Uttar Pradesh, India, Triveni’s earliest memory of education is the daily walk—miles each way—to a modest elementary school in Kanpur. Even as a boy, he was driven by a deep love of learning, a drive that would carry him far from the dusty village roads of his youth.

By the time he finished his bachelor’s degree, Triveni was already working in a technological role for the Indian Central Government while pursuing his master’s degree. But he didn’t stop there. Next came a leap across the world: Triveni emigrated to the United States to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a journey soon joined by his wife, Gigi, and their young daughter.

Triveni’s career became a testament to perseverance and curiosity. After completing his doctorate, he and his family put down roots in New Berlin, Wisconsin, where he spent nearly 14 years working as a general manager in Milwaukee’s technology sector. Yet his true calling was broader: consulting for over 80 companies around the globe. This role sent him on adventures from Japan to Brazil and across Europe, experiences he still recalls with a sense of wonder. The world became his classroom, and airline rewards points—nearly a million—became the ticket for Gigi to join his travels.

He didn’t just collect memories; he created a legacy in print as well, authoring four published books in addition to his work in technology. But for all his global impact, Triveni and Gigi never lost sight of where it all began. Together, they gave back to his childhood village: upgrading his old school, starting a bus service for local children, planting fruit trees, and building rainwater reservoirs. Their success was always shared.

Family has long been Triveni’s true pride. He and Gigi raised three children—two daughters and a son, each five years apart—and all three studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Only their son chose to remain in Wisconsin, which eventually drew Triveni and Gigi from Milwaukee to Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale in January 2024. Though Gigi has since passed, Triveni’s stories, warmth, and thoughtful conversation fill the halls.

Renaissance is lucky to count Triveni among its residents. Whether he’s sharing travel tales, reflecting on books at Book Club, or talking about the power of giving back, Triveni Shukla embodies a legacy of resilience, curiosity, and kindness—a legacy that continues, every day.

Jamison Toepel as Clinical Executive Director

Madison, Wis. (August 2025) — Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale is pleased to announce that former Executive Director, Jamison Toepel, is now serving as Clinical Executive Director. Toepel has been with the Renaissance team since 2022 and has consistently displayed a passion for nursing and a love for serving seniors.

In this position, Toepel will oversee the day-to-day care and services of the residents of Renaissance. He will be hands-on in developing and maintaining personalized care plans for each resident, ensuring regulatory compliance, as well as managing the clinical team members.

Born and raised in Lake Mills, Wis., Toepel made the move to Florida to attend Full Sail University for an Associate’s degree in Film & Video Production. Yet, coming from a family who values serving others, Toepel decided to follow in his mother’s footsteps and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse while living in Austin, Texas. Having been greatly impacted by watching his grandmother suffer from dementia, Toepel saw the impact that good caregivers and nurses had on her. He entered into the senior living industry while still in Austin, but upon returning to Lake Mills, he joined the team at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale as Resident Services Director in March 2022. He was quickly promoted to Executive Director in December 2022 until recently, when he assumed the position of Clinical Executive Director. With over 17 years of experience, Toepel’s greatest commitment is to provide the highest quality of care to the residents of Renaissance Senior Living.

“I am committed to serving our residents to the best of my ability and with the dignity they deserve. I believe that I thrive best when I’m working directly with the residents, assuring that they are well taken care of,” says Toepel. “We strive every day to give families peace of mind by setting the standard for quality care in the Madison area.”

New Executive Director

Madison, Wisc. (July 2025) — Bringing over 24 years of experience in healthcare, Sira Nsibirwa has joined Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale as Executive Director. Nsibirwa’s career is centered around a deep commitment to provide quality care, maintain operational excellence and cultivate a people-centered approach in a meaningful environment.

Nsibirwa was born in Uganda, but he moved to the United States when he was 14 years old. Throughout high school, he lived on a dairy farm in Brodhead, WI, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and a passion for community.

Upon graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Nsibirwa’s healthcare career began as a dietary aide, Certified Nursing Assistant and eventually a med-tech in a long-term care community. He later served as a Memory Care Director for a small community while also helping with Sales and Marketing. From there, Nsibirwa managed group homes for individuals with cognitive disabilities and traumatic brain injuries. In 2017, he finally landed in the assisted living industry where Nsibirwa has served in the roles of Executive Director and Regional Director of Operations.

“I love working in senior living because every day is a chance to honor the incredible lives, wisdom, and stories of those who came before us. Serving our residents is not just a job, it is a privilege and an honor,” states Nsibirwa.

Legacy Lives: Robert “Bob” Rodman

Robert “Bob” Rodman was born on June 1, 1939 in Danville, Illinois. After spending two decades working for his family’s plumbing supply business, he took the reins of one of his own. Proudly, he and his wife, Verjean, grew his plumbing supply business fivefold, and with his success, they were able to expand the business to Indiana. The Rodman’s also owned and operated 83 apartments in Illinois, which Bob claims to have been a huge responsibility but also added pride to his professional life.

Bob and Verjean’s partnership extends far beyond business, as they have been married over 65 years. Together they raised a daughter and son, who are the center of their world. The Rodman’s love every moment they have with their children and their one cherished grandchild.

The Rodman’s adored traveling together, having gone on five cruises, including one that took them through the Panama Canal. But a highlight of Bob’s life was traveling with Verjean throughout the US in a mobile home for seven years.

Bob also enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He has dabbled in woodwork, hunted and fished, and he has loved to cook since his younger years. One of Bob’s favorite stories is of the time he and Verjean went to a county fair. He tried some of the bread from the fair’s baking competition. Bob commented on how he thought he could do better, so he went home, baked a loaf of bread, brought it back and submitted it to the competition. A couple days later, he was awarded a blue ribbon for his bread!

He also has a deep love for animals, especially dogs. Bob still talks fondly about his beloved Saint Bernard and the loyal hunting dogs he had throughout the years.

Bob has greatly enjoyed his time at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale, having joined the community in May 2025. Donna Wilfong was born in Madison, WI on June 6, 1942, growing up on the East Side as a middle child with her two sisters. With Madison’s thoughtful city planning, abundance of parks and lakes, recreational opportunities, walking paths and great public transportation, Donna never felt a reason to leave, making Madison her permanent home. Donna cherishes the memories of tranquil summers spent canoeing and swimming in Madison's beautiful lakes.

Despite staying in her hometown, Donna, her husband, Dick Wilfong, and their three children, loved to travel, and she has many fantastic memories of exploring Europe and the United States. A standout memory is a five-week biking expedition through France and Holland with her friend. With just a map and a sense of adventure, they biked from hotel to hotel, enjoying the breathtaking scenery. She also fondly recalls RV trips across the U.S. with her kids, venturing into like the Appalachian Mountains, where they encountered plenty of bears! Beyond traveling, Donna has always adored the outdoors, spending countless hours enjoying long walks in nature, canoeing, and swimming.

In her 30s, Donna received a degree in accounting and proceeded to work for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Years later, Donna pursued a career as a travel agent fueled by her love for travel. This new career helped her visit wonderful places such as Moscow, Russia.

Donna has been a resident of Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale since December 2023. She loves to spend her time enjoying the sunshine in the courtyard, engrossed in a good book, or enjoying lively conversation. We love hearing her travel stories and are grateful for her warmth, humor and kindness she brings to every interaction.

Lois Statz was born on July 22, 1932 in Barneveld, Wisconsin, where she lived with her mother, father, sister and brother. When Lois turned 12 years old, she and her family moved to her grandfather’s farm where she and her siblings helped work in the fields planting crops.

Lois graduated from Barneveld High School and immediately moved to Madison to live with her sister. There she took classes at MATC for sewing and worked as a bookkeeper at a bank. It was while living in Madison, that Lois met and fell in love with a firefighter who would become her husband, James Statz. The two went on to have four children, Teresa, Michelle, Michael and Steve.

Some of Lois’s favorite memories are of her family’s camping vacations. During the children’s summer break, they would pack up and go camping in different states. According to Lois, they have seen just about every state in the US! Not only does Lois have a love for camping, but she also has a deep passion for sewing. She has sewn everything from curtains to her daughter's wedding dress, and she continues to sew presents for her seven granddaughters and one grandson for birthdays and holidays. She loves to keep her hands busy with an array of sewing projects for her loved ones.

Lois came to live at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale in October 2023 and has been a beloved resident ever since! She loves all the activities Hilldale has to offer. In particular she likes the crafts, music events, and exercise classes offered. She has made a lovely group of friends, who she spends time with reading in the courtyard. She is well loved and always brings a warm smile to gatherings.

Bill O'Neal grew up in Gary, Indiana, with his parents and older sister. With many fond memories of his childhood, his father, a farmer, and his mother, a teacher, instilled in him a passion for education that would shape his career and life of learning.

After graduating from the University of Indiana with a dual focus on education and paleontology, Bill embarked on a fulfilling journey as an eighth-grade science teacher. His exceptional teaching style and genuine affection for his students earned him the endearing nickname "Mr. Kind and Wonderful." Bill's dedication didn't go unnoticed, as he received numerous accolades from the State of Wisconsin for his impactful contributions to education.

Bill met the love of his life, Gail, during a blind date orchestrated by a fraternity brother and his girlfriend. On that date, they stumbled across a 13ft hole and they decided to turn their date into an impromptu spelunking adventure. From that moment on, Bill has been captivated by Gail’s kind heart and shared love of adventure, including the adventure of raising two children.

Bill's enthusiasm for spelunking runs deep, even sharing this excitement with his students by taking them on memorable caving field trips. He is an avid reader and has an impressive library, particularly of books pertaining to caving and paleontology, that are proudly displayed next to his fossilized isopod. Bill is also an accomplished musician, having learned to play multiple instruments. But Bill’s fondest memories revolve around spending time with his children and grandchildren at their lake house.

Since arriving at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale in March 2025, Bill has been an active member of the community. He often shares his musical talents, delighting both staff and fellow residents. He also enjoys participating in the crafts, exercise classes and game activities offered, bringing his characteristic enthusiasm to every endeavor.

Cleveland, Tenn. (Feb. 2024) — Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living, a family of senior living communities serving the Eastern United States, are excited to announce Alzheimer’s Support Services, a new program for both companies. This is a free service that is designed to give support and resources to families and caregivers who are navigating the pressures of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss conditions.

Dr. Ronald Harvard has come aboard as the Director of Alzheimer’s Support Services. As a pastor, counselor, college professor and primary caregiver to his late wife, Linda, who suffered from Alzheimer’s for 20 years, Dr. Harvard brings many years of experience to this new program. At various times, Dr. Harvard has served his alma mater, Lee University, as a faculty member in the psychology department, as Director of Counseling, and as an adjunct faculty member at Lee Online. He and Linda also served as senior pastor at churches in Florida, Indiana, and Georgia.

With degrees in Biblical Studies, Social Psychology, and Pastoral Counseling, Dr. Harvard’s love for teaching and counseling have defined his life, but no more so than the love of his life, Linda, and their four children.

Dr. Harvard’s introduction to Alzheimer’s was personal and very painful. In the fall of 2003, Dr. Harvard recognized the beginning signs of memory loss in his late wife, Linda. Fifteen years later, Linda became a resident of a Legacy Senior Living community, The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland. In May of 2023, Linda passed away. Dr. Harvard chronicled his struggles and victories in his blog, “Dementia: walking victoriously through the ‘Long Goodbye,’” offering lessons learned, meditations, and comfort to many.

“What became clear to me during the process of loving Linda through the battle of Alzheimer’s, was that I was being prepared to minister to families going through similar situations. My mission in leading this new Alzheimer’s Support Service is to provide behavioral insights, practical direction and comfort through support groups and one-on-one meetings,” said Dr. Harvard.

Jerry Apps and daughter, Susan Apps-Bodilly, share memories and stories centered on family recipes from the Great Depression and World War II on PBS Wisconsin.

(MADISON, Wisc.) — Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale, a premier assisted living and memory care facility, was treated to a special viewing on PBS Wisconsin when one of their residents, Jerry Apps, was featured in Jerry Apps: Food & Memories. Jerry, having appeared on PBS Wisconsin six times over the years, is an endearing and engaging storyteller and writer who, on this occasion, shared stories from his cookbook based on his mother, Eleanor Apps’, recipe box and the role she played as a farm wife.

Jerry and his daughter, Susan, stumbled into the idea of writing a family cookbook, accompanied with stories, when Apps found his mother’s recipe box after she had passed away. Jerry notes that he “saw stories as he looked at those recipes” as many old memories resurfaced. This fortunate find eventually turned into an idea, and after enlisting Susan to help “translate” the recipes into modern measurements, the Apps compiled a book of recipes and stories published as Old Farm Country Cookbook: Recipes, Menus, and Memories in 2017. The cookbook follows the growing seasons of their farm during Jerry’s childhood, which coincided with the Great Depression and WWII. Much of what Jerry wrote and shared on PBS Wisconsin is high praise of his mother’s ingenuity, skill, business acumen, wisdom, hard work and love as she navigated a young family through difficult and desperate time.

The kitchen, Eleanor’s domain, was the headquarters of the household. According to Jerry, it was not only where all the food was made, it was also where all the decisions were made. “The kitchen was the warmest, the friendliest, and where the most important stuff would happen,” Jerry recalls. Eleanor spent the majority of her day in the kitchen with her apron made from a recycled feed sack and her wood burning stove. She would not only be cooking up meals for the day, but canning in preparation for the winter months. Jerry recalls his mother canning on her hot stove in the heat of summer, and never once complaining, because it was essential to their survival in the winter months.

Food was central to life, not only to their own family unit, but it was also always present in community gatherings. The women of the community would constantly be sharing recipes, feeding laborers and hosting community events. Weddings, births, funerals and holidays were all accompanied with potluck feasts. Jerry describes how important food was to these events and how it expressed love between neighbors.

“Food brought us together. Food created community. And for a community to exist, one has to know the neighbor in depth. There’s no better way of knowing the neighbor than working aside of them, sharing a story with them, and sharing a piece of bread with them,” Jerry concludes.

Toepel has previously served as the Resident Services Director at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale since April 2022.

(MADISON, Wisc.) - Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale has named Sarfraz Sidhu, MD, FACP, of Oak Medical Onsite Physician Group as the facility’s new medical director.

Dr. Sidhu is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine, and attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, for his undergraduate degree. He began his career as a hospitalist with ProHealth Care in 2007.

“We are pleased to offer our residents access to on-site physician care through Oak Medical and Dr. Sidhu,” said Kim Kay, Executive Director of Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale.

Dr. Sidhu will participate in monthly Quality Assurance programs when needed to ensure best practices, provide input on policies and procedures, and be available as a resource for the team at Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale. (MADISON, Wisc.) - Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale’s team, which will begin moving in residents on May 2nd, helped to make the Ronald McDonald House in Madison a little more like home the past two months by providing homemade meals for visiting families.

Chef Malek, along with the rest of the Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale leadership team, prepared chicken piccata, rice pilaf, and baby carrots for families on March 10th, and returned April 11th to provide a spaghetti dinner for families.

“The families staying at the Ronald McDonald House are there because they have a child in the hospital. I know personally that it can be a difficult time for them and if there’s anything we can do to help make that time a little easier, we want to do it. It isn’t just about the food, it’s about letting these families know that they aren’t alone and our community supports them,” said Chef Malek, Dining Services Director of Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale.

The leadership team at Renaissance has committed to supporting the families at the Ronald McDonald House with a meal each month going forward.

“We truly appreciate their efforts,” said Michael Rosenblum, Ronald McDonald House Director. “It was a pleasure to meet Melissa, Penelope and Chef Malek. They had the kitchen smelling wonderful and created a beautiful meal for our families, and we thank them all.”

“Meeting the families that are away from home while caring for their child was so rewarding. While we enjoyed preparing and serving the families, knowing that we provided reprieve for that day from grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning is what matters. We are grateful to be able to serve them all,” said Kim Kay, Executive Director of Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale.

Yaun, a Wisconsin native, will oversee staffing and care provided at the facility’s 28 memory care suites, known as The Harbor. This includes oversight of its state-of-the-art memory care programs Purposeful Day℠ and SimpleC™, which have been researched and designed to enhance and improve the lives of individuals living with memory-related conditions.

With over a decade in the nursing field, Yaun’s experience includes several years of long-term care, including three years as a Licensed Certified Dementia Practitioner.

(January 11, 2022) – Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale, the newest member of Cleveland, Tenn.-based Legacy Senior Living family of assisted living and memory care facilities projected to open in the 1st quarter of 2022, will host a book signing with former Wisconsin Gov. Marty Schreiber on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 4:30 p.m.

During the event, which is free of charge and open to the public, Gov. Schreiber will share personal stories from his book, My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver, in which he candidly chronicles his experience as a caregiver to his wife, Elaine, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease. The book offers valuable wisdom to help others who are also caring for loved ones.

“We are incredibly honored and excited to host this special book signing with former Gov. Schreiber. In America, millions of people are serving as family caregivers to a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. My Two Elaines allows caregivers to see that they are not alone, and this amazing book is a great resource for anyone whose loved one has been diagnosed with this disease,” Kim Kay, Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale Executive Director, said.

(January 7, 2022) – Barry Ray and Bryan Cook, industry veterans and founders of the Cleveland, TN-based Legacy Senior Living family of assisted living and memory care communities, are leading in the redevelopment and opening of Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale. The totally redesigned and remodeled senior living facility across from Hilldale Shopping Center is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2022.

Empowered by their mission to make each senior’s golden years the best of their lives, Ray and Cook have been committed since founding Legacy in 2006 to providing exceptional senior living communities where residents can live each day full of purpose, experience meaningful connection and embrace their personal stories with others. Ray and Cook collectively have over 60 years of senior living experience and feel what they get to do every day in serving seniors and their families is truly a calling.

Ray joined the senior living profession in 1988 and has been able to serve in key leadership roles during his career. Initially working for a large national provider, he served in various capacities, including director of facility accounting, director of asset management, vice president of assisted living development, vice president of finance and then as president of a subsidiary that operated 40 retirement facilities in 28 states.

Cook is also a veteran of the senior housing and long-term care industry. He entered the profession in 1992 and has served continuously in the industry for the entirety of his career. He began as a skilled nursing facility administrator and progressively grew to responsibility for 63 nursing facilities as a division vice president. Additionally, he was involved as vice-president of a startup assisted living company that grew to nearly 20 assisted living communities across the U.S. He is a Certified Administrator with the American College of Health Care Administrators.

Located at 602 Segoe Road and currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation and remodel, The Harbor will feature 28 memory care suites where seniors from Dane County and the surrounding areas will receive specialized care from licensed and certified caregivers who are trained to help seniors who are battling memory loss and other aspects of dementia.

The Harbor concept was developed after years of research and planning with notable experts in the field of dementia. The overall theme, design, colors, furniture, and common areas all reflect a 1950’s era that is reminiscent of younger days.
