Resident Spotlight: Judy Nepkroeff
Judy Nepokroeff’s story begins in a snowy suburb just outside Buffalo, New York—a place she loved for its close-knit community and the warmth of family. Born to a devoted homemaker mother and a chemist father, Judy’s childhood was rich with love, laughter, and traditions that have stayed with her through the years.
Judy shared a special bond with her father, who taught her to garden and enchanted her with bedtime stories, including a favorite, Huckleberry Finn. Her connection with her mother was just as strong, rooted in a shared love for the Pennsylvania mountains and the joy of holiday traditions passed down from their German heritage. Judy fondly remembers the magical Christmas mornings when her father would play Bing Crosby’s Silent Night on the record player, insisting that the children wait until the song finished before coming downstairs to open presents—making the moment feel sacred and slow.
Growing up, Judy was surrounded by family—the sister she adored, who was seven years her senior, and a brother close in age who was her playmate in all things, from board games to their own invented winter game called “fox and goose.” In the snow-covered backyard, one sibling would leave a trail as the “goose,” while the other, the “fox,” would follow, turning chilly winters into joyful adventures. Though her sister passed away from COVID, Judy’s love and memories of her remain a cherished part of her story.
Judy’s creativity and love of learning blossomed early. A gifted ballerina, she once traveled across New York State to spend a summer studying dance in New York City. She also began playing the piano at age seven alongside her best friend—a passion she still carries today. Books have always been a refuge and delight for Judy, especially the classical section of her parents' home library, where she was sent whenever boredom struck.
Her love of language and literature led Judy to study Latin American and Iberian Studies in college, diving deep into cultures and languages she found fascinating. After graduating, she found a fulfilling career as an education coordinator for the Department of Family Medicine in Madison, Wisconsin, a role that allowed her to connect with people and keep learning.
Family has always been at the heart of Judy’s life. She and her husband raised four children: sons Nick and Peter, who live nearby in Madison; daughter Molly in Denver; and Anne in Chicago. From them, Judy is the proud grandmother of six grandchildren, who bring her immense joy.
