Resident Spotlight: Mary Ann Fraley

Mary Ann Fraley’s story begins in the soulful city of New Orleans, Louisiana, where for the first twelve years of her life she and her family lived nestled right on a college campus. Imagine waking up every day surrounded by the buzz of sorority sisters and fraternity brothers, the hum of youthful energy mingling with the moss-draped oaks—a childhood anything but ordinary. Yet, what truly lit up Mary Ann’s early years was the magic of Mardi Gras, when the city paused, schools closed, and the streets filled with vibrant parades, music, and the sweet thrill of catching handfuls of candy tossed from colorful floats.

At twelve, Mary Ann’s world shifted north to Madison, Wisconsin—a place that felt like a fresh canvas. She embraced the diversity of her new school, the crispness of the northern air, and the chance to weave new friendships. The University of Wisconsin became her next home, where she nurtured a love of learning that would shape her life’s work and passions.

Though Mary Ann’s career began in the lively classrooms of elementary schools, where she taught with warmth and patience, her true heart beat strongest for music. Gifted with a keen ear and nimble fingers, she found joy in the delicate art of computer music engraving and the soulful keys of the piano and organ. Even now, her music fills church halls with grace and beauty as she steps in as a substitute, sharing her gift with all who listen.

Family has always been the gentle anchor in Mary Ann’s life. She raised two daughters, Christina and Emilie, weaving a home filled with love and laughter. The memories she cherishes most are of snowy visits to her mother’s family in Ohio—those first sparkling flakes a wonder to a girl raised in Louisiana’s warmth.

Since joining Renaissance Senior Living of Hilldale in July 2024, Mary Ann has become a beacon of light and joy. Her piano recitals are not just performances but invitations to pause, listen, and feel. She leads a knitting group where threads of friendship are woven tightly, and she dives into book and travel clubs with curiosity and enthusiasm. Her simple, wise advice—“Don’t sweat the small stuff”—echoes the peace she’s found in knowing what truly matters.

Mary Ann Fraley’s life is a rich melody of celebration, creativity, and wisdom—a song that continues to inspire everyone fortunate enough to know her. We are truly blessed to have her light shining so brightly here at Renaissance.
